Who We Are
We are women working in all academic subjects, from the languages, maths & sciences to English & all areas of the humanities. Renaissance Women Tutoring grew out of a decade-long collaboration that began in the spring of 2008. At that time, one of us was a newly hired English teacher at the same school where the other was the on-site tutor.
We became admirers of each other’s dedication and creative talents in bringing out the best in our students, leading eventually to a harmonious friendship. As word of Melissa’s success continued to spread among parents, her roster of tutees continued to grow, prompting her to ask Candace if she’d be interested in homeschooling one of her students. In time, Candace was applying her classroom experience and knowledge of curriculum development to several tutoring gigs, eventually realizing the joy of working with students one-on-one or in small groups and tailoring lessons more successfully to a student’s specific needs.
As we continued to share more students, it seemed a logical culmination of our many years of professional collaboration to come together to form a tutoring business under a single banner: Renaissance Women Tutoring.
Who We Serve
We serve students in grades 6-12, as well as adults of all ages working their way through college and graduate school. Check out our individual bios to see our stories and specialties.
Whether your struggles stem from subject matter, executive functioning, a learning difference, Aspergers or a mental health issue, we can help you. Our decades of tutoring and teaching experiences gave us the tools to flexibly adapt our methods to any learning style or difference.
What We Know
We know how difficult it is for regular classroom teachers to create individualized lessons for each student and cater to all who need extra help between classes. These days, teachers are asked to spend their planning periods covering other classes or attending meetings.
Their afternoons are spent running extra-curricular activities. This often means that students who need their help are left to languish.
It is easy to forget that the current traditional classroom setting is a relatively new arrangement rooted in 19th-century industrialism. Compulsory public education for everyone is a necessary good in any democratic society. But for centuries, youth education was accomplished with private teachers (think Jane Eyre). If history tells us that there is no single way to educate, then there is no reason to assume that because you can’t digest the teacher’s lessons in a room full of peers who seem to “get it,” you must be a failure.
How We Help
Thankfully, you don’t need to be a 19th-century aristocrat to get the kind of education you need. Renaissance Women Tutoring fosters that experience by building robust relationships with our students and their families to meet their needs, develop their skills, and nurture their strengths.
